Sometimes it's helpful to write the rest of the essay first, and then go back to the thesis statement. But basically the thesis statement introduces the main points/argument(s) so the reader knows what to expect from the rest of the essay.

A good structure is to make your introductory paragraph which gives background info on the topic, then put your thesis statement right after.
