Gucchi:

Read the speech excerpt to answer the question that follows. "Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. … I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. … I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack …, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire."—President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Address to Congress (1941) Based on the quote, why did the United States become involved in World War II? The United States felt a duty to enter the war to defend its military allies and trade partners. President Roosevelt was frustrated because Congress ignored previous requests to enter the war. The United States suffered a violent strike that was carried out by a foreign empire without any warning. President Roosevelt convinced Congress they should help defend the foreign empire from more violence.

Gucchi:

im kinda confused on this question, can anyone help?

AZ:

Keep in mind that WW2 was going on since 1939 the United States did not join until after this attack

Gucchi:

Hm, alright

AZ:

but why did the US enter the war? "the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." "ask that the Congress declare that since the UNPROVOKED and dastardly attack" unprovoked is the key word here

Gucchi:

the us entered the war because they were fighting for their country?

Gucchi:

@AZ you there?

Gucchi:

@SaltTheLoser can you help?

AZ:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @Gucchi the us entered the war because they were fighting for their country? \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) yeah, they were attacked unprovoked do you know what unprovoked means? what answer choice would be correct then?

Gucchi:

is it either a or d?

Gucchi:

unprovoked is not caused by anything done or said.

AZ:

that is the definition, yes but you're still not on the right track with the answer A tells you that they joined because they felt compelled to help their friends But we know they joined because they got attacked for no reason D says that America wants to defend the foreign empire from violence? Why would you join a war to defend another country from violence

AZ:

which answer choice says that the we joined the war because we were attacked for no reason

Gucchi:

@AZ C?

AZ:

That's correct!

Gucchi:

Thank you so much!

AZ:

You're welcome!
