boredfr:

How much tarp is needed to exactly cover the lateral faces of the tent?Explain or show how you found your answer.

boredfr:

Side ft~10 ft Slant height~8 ft

boredfr:

@AZ

AZ:

Is there an image? How does this tent look like

boredfr:

The tent looks like how I drew it, the what it described |dw:1617227904019:dw|

AZ:

The lateral area is going to be the area of all four triangles |dw:1617228102938:dw|

AZ:

Area of triangle = 1/2 * base * height so basically 1/2 * 10 * 8 and then multiply by 4 because you have four triangles

AZ:

Also if you don't know the difference between slant height and height, here you go

boredfr:

No I have the area but it is asking for the surface area

AZ:

surface area is the area of each side

AZ:

add up the areas of each side and that'll be the surface area for lateral surface area, you just don't add the area of the base which in this case is the square

boredfr:

idk how ._.

AZ:

you don't know how to find the area of a triangle? and of a square? and then add up the areas of each shape in the net?

AZ:

and remember there's four triangles so you either add the numbers four times or just 4 * number

boredfr:

._. ik how to find the area of a square but not a triangle ._.

snowflake0531:

Triangle is base time height divided by 2 Make sure that the height you have is perpendicular to the base... not a slanted line....

boredfr:

I dont have that ._. I only have slant height-

snowflake0531:

Solve for the perpendicular height then

boredfr:

HUHHH? tHe WhAtTtTtTt???

snowflake0531:

._. Do you know the pythagorean theorem

boredfr:

a square + b square = c square?

snowflake0531:

\[a^2+b^2=c^2\] where a and b are the 2 sides, and c is the hypotenuse

snowflake0531:

5 is one leg... hypotenuse is 8 so we have \[5^2 + b^2 = 8^2\] can you solve for b

boredfr:

no xdd

snowflake0531:

do you know your exponents....?

boredfr:

Yes

snowflake0531:

What is 5^2 and 8^2

boredfr:

25 64

snowflake0531:

What is 64-25

boredfr:

Ummmmmmmmmm 39 i think? Mental math ._.

snowflake0531:

Yes, so b is sqrt39 ._.

boredfr:

xd but so then what is the surface area? ._.

AZ:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @snowflake0531 Triangle is base time height divided by 2 Make sure that the height you have is perpendicular to the base... not a slanted line.... \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) but that's only if you're trying to find the volume, then you'd need to know the height we need surface area so the slant height is what we need

snowflake0531:

???????

AZ:

surface area = the sum of the areas of the sides if you're finding the height, that's not going to help you find the area of the triangle faces

snowflake0531:

when i meant height and base, i meant the height and length of the base, like 2D base

AZ:

?? but this is a 3D figure

snowflake0531:

Yes, bc this is a 3D figure, i only need to find area, so i just find 2D area of it all

AZ:

b r u h

snowflake0531:

goh'3hqtt4hq4yqj4jq name me confused

AZ:

Take a look at the image once more: slant height is what we use we would calculate height if we're going to find the volume of the pyramid

snowflake0531:

I don't mean that height, i meant for hte 4 triangles, i need the height of one triangle._.

AZ:

the height of the triangles is the slant height...

snowflake0531:

wdym..... i need|dw:1617239365005:dw| i need x and y, not te slant height

AZ:

x is the slant height...

snowflake0531:

no, x is the perpendicular height perpendicular to it._. the slant height is like notjbgi3q;thoq43iqhjo5 idk

snowflake0531:

IM CONFUSEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

boredfr:

I dont get it ._.

snowflake0531:

i don't get it either._.

AZ:

What is the exact question once more? Can you take a screenshot?

Tonycoolkid21:

▪️◑﹏◐:-)

AZ:

I'm not sure what you're calculating anymore - if it's the lateral surface area or just the surface area

Tonycoolkid21:

✅👍🏼

AZ:

|dw:1617240026335:dw| the height of the triangle is 8 the base is 10 the area of triangle = 1/2 * 8 * 10 area = ??

boredfr:

Area =40

AZ:

so that's the area of 1 triangle the area of 4 triangles is going to be 4 * 40 = ??

boredfr:

160

AZ:

so the four triangles is going to be your lateral surface area if you want the total area then add the area of the square to the area of the four triangles total surface area = 160 + (10*10)

boredfr:

260?

AZ:

yes, that's the total surface area and 160 would be your lateral surface area
