Jamin wants to paint a wall in his bedroom. In order to know how much paint to buy, he first needs to know the approximate area. There is a window in the middle of the wall, so he'll only need to paint the shaded part shown. How many square feet is just the window? So you want to find the area of the white space?
Our answer units are in sq ft. We have one dimension (18 inches, the width of the window) that we must convert to ft. Since 1 foot = 12 inches, we can divide 18 inches by 12 inches to get 1.5 feet. From there: area of a rectangle is length * width. Calculate the area of the window by multiplying the length * width of the window.
