The vertex is either the highest or lowest point of a parabola, depending on which way the parabola opens.
I am referencing this form btw: \[y=ax^2+bx+c\])
the "a" term determines whether the vertex is the highest point or lowest point. If it is positive, the vertex is the lowest point on the parabola. If it is negative, the vertex is the highest point on the parabola.
