Telling the truth is better because telling a lie will only lead to more lies and nothing good will come from it

Yes, telling the truth may also be hurtful to others but that's why we need to be aware of how we word things. It's better to be honest with them than to be fake and lie to their faces. Once they find out you lied to them it'll be much more hurtful.
