Uhm, They traded for water to support their crops, which gave their civilization a chance to survive.

Rivers were appealing to the first civilizations because they provided a consistent supply of drinking water and made the land fertile for crop cultivation. Furthermore, goods and people could be easily transported, and the people in these civilizations were able to fish and hunt the animals that came to drink water.
