what is string theory
This is actually a very complicated question, but I'll try to give a brief explanation: There are two broad branches of physics (quantum mechanics and general relativity) which are both useful, but incompatible with each other based on how they interpret/describe the four major forces. String theory is an attempt to unify the two branches, by describing particles as strings that vibrate at different frequencies.
