Hm, I had something with this as the topic question for an English class last semester. For a response, I said that they can show many things. First, yes, they can show things we are interested in. Also, they can show class. Upper-class people tend to have nicer things. Lastly, they can show one's story. They can be little reminders of the things we have gone through and overcome in life.
