kekeman:

Why might have Gorbachev's use of Glasnost & Perestroika had the opposite effect than he intended?

kekeman:

Any ideas?

kittybasil:

Well, let's first establish what he might've intended with its use. They were intended as reforms, right? But how exactly were they implemented? That might give some clues as to why it possibly backfired.

They were implemented so that the Soviet people would learn the truth

kittybasil:

Hmm, interesting. But... the truth about...?

kekeman:

About the government

kittybasil:

Okay, that seems like a good start. But maybe elaborate more on that? You might need a more in-depth answer.

kekeman:

Gorbachev had hoped that the policies of glasnost and perestroika would help preserve the Soviet system by instituting a small amount of liberalization into the politics and economies of the Soviet Union and its satellite countries. Rather than preserving the system, however, it contributed to undermining it.

kittybasil:

Those are your own words? I think that's remarkably well-written!

kekeman:

Thanks

kittybasil:

Yeah, so that's pretty accurate. Good job 🎉
