Zheng He died in 1435. That same year, the Ming emperor suddenly halted further construction of ships. Later, he banned ships with more than two masts. China turned its back on exploration. Why? No one is really sure. Some think that it was too costly to continue. Others think that it was because of the lack of interest of Confucian scholars. These scholars believed that Chinese civilization was the best in the world. Why, then, was there any need to contact other cultures? They wanted to keep their traditions the same. This thinking later led to a weakening in Chinese power.
