The discovery of a trade route from Europe to Asia was a pretty big deal for world trade at the time. For one thing, it became quite faster for goods to travel to and from Europe and Asia--goods like spices, tea, silks, etc. This also paved the way for European countries to form colonies and territories in Asia, like the British colonies in India. It also exposed some of the more isolationist Asian countries, like China and Japan, to technologies and social elements from Europe, which played a part in their development down the line
