so he drove 45 miles in 1 hour and 10 minutes
on the return trip, driving those 45 miles took him 1 hour 30 minutes

So what is his average speed?

Average speed = total distance / time

the total distance he drove is 45 + 45 miles

the total time he drove (and we want this in hours so that way our speed will be in miles per hour)

so 1 hour 10 mins + 1 hour 30 mins 
is equal to 2 hours 40 minutes which is 2.67 hours

So can you calculate the average speed now that you know the total distance and the time it took to drive it?
