johnnyboy13:

Data are collected about the amount of time, in minutes, each band member spends practicing. How does a single outlier change the lower and upper quartiles of the collected data?

TurtlePrincess:

Hi, do you have an answer to this?

Mercury:

Quartiles are generally outlier-resistant but they will still shift the quartiles up or down a bit (depending if the outlier is an upper or lower outlier). This is because an outlier will shift the position of the upper and lower quartiles by inserting another data point.
