Jared wrote an equation for the perimeter of an equilateral triangle as 3x = 20. What does x represent in his equation?

crispyrat:

ok so permiter means the adding of all sides so to find the perimeter of this triangle there is 3 equal sides so knowing this what is x

jurassic:

ummm it going to be a equal number that's all I know :)

crispyrat:

? ok so three sides in a triangle add them u get permeter which is 20 so what is x

jurassic:

i hate math umm i really dont know umm

crispyrat:

aight ok so if my triangle had sides that equaled 5 then 3(5)=15 which is the permeter so what is x??

jurassic:

5 i think

crispyrat:

? no ok so if i do this 3(5) when 5 is the the length of my side than what is x??

jurassic:

3 right???

crispyrat:

ok so 3(3)=9 so 3(?)=20

jurassic:

6.6 i think

crispyrat:

well im assuming u mean 20/3 which is 6 2/3 which rounded is 6.6 or 6.7 so ye

jurassic:

yur

jurassic:

thank you i sumwhat get it ig

snowflake0531:

We aren't trying to solve for x We just want to know what x represents And since an equilateral triangle has 3 congruent sides, and 3x = 20, x represents the length of one side

Shawnte:

simple just do 20/3...

jurassic:

thank you for the help
