civil rights: • 1954 civil rights movement begins • Started with brown vs. board • 15th amendment challenge segregation • 1965 ended civil rights • The decision overturned the pressy v. Ferguson (1896) “separate but equal” • At first president Eisenhower left enforcement of brown up to states and did not enforce the decision. • 1957 • Arkansas governor Orval Faubus called the natural guard to keep black students from enrolling in little rocks central high school. • Sent the army to force integration for the black students. • 1955 rosa parks arrested for disobeying on Alabama laws requiring segregation on city buses sparked the Montgomery bus boycott. • Martin Luther king organized a 381-day boycott of the bus system to protest segregation. • The boycott led to integration of city buses and to the rise of MLKJ as the leader of black civil rights • MLK non-violent approach inspired other groups to act. • 1960 students from NC led a sit-in at a segregated lunch. • 1961 “freedom riders” rode buses throughout the south to test whether integration. • Freed riders faced arrest and violence.
