“I just thought of something,” said Gracie. She took the cake knife and smoothed out the icing over the cut that Gilda had made. She made another cut in the cake, dividing it into two rectangles.



“Look! It’s still two rectangles, but they are different rectangles than we had before. It has to be the same area since it is the same cake, but the measurements will be different.”

“Let’s get the ruler out again and check,” said Gilda. Gracie measured the larger rectangle. It was 13 inches long and 8 inches wide. Then she measured the smaller rectangle. It was 9 inches long and 2 inches wide.

“The larger rectangle is square inches. The smaller rectangle is square inches. Together, they are square inches. Is that what we got before?”

“It surely is,” said Gilda. “It should be the same, unless you took an extra piece of cake while I wasn’t looking!” Gilda laughed.

“No, but if I did, I could take it out of this corner. Then we’d have to make lots of cuts to make rectangles so we could find the area.”



“That looks like a challenge!” said Gilda. “I’ll cut it one way and you find a different way to cut it into rectangles. Here are my cuts. Now you try.”



“All right!” said Gracie as she smoothed out the icing one more time. “Here are my cuts.”



“It just shows that there’s more than one way to cut a cake!” said Gilda. “Let’s have another piece!”
