How are brain neurotransmitters linked to bipolar disorder or depression?

I'll try and explain this in a way that makes sense, neurotransmitters such as serotonin which is probably most known affects your mood and pretty much controls the neural activity, which can cause you to have bipolar depression, think of it as dopamine, dopamine gives you the feeling of pleasure or happiness, where there's low levels of serotonin, you are sad, when it's high, you're happy
