The basis for this type of counseling, using the principles of population genetics, is one that allows the counselor to openly show how the population is affected by disease, along with how often these diseases happen. A genetic counselor can also use this to demonstrate how to cope with a child that has disabilities or that has some sort of illness that affects the body. Genetic counselors also use this to give valid reasoning to their claims and allow their subjects to give feedback upon them. These give valid reasoning to the families that are subjected to it.
