Alexandriiaa:

Grace has a segment with endpoints C (3, 4) and D (11, 3) that is divided by a point E such that CE and DE form a 3:5 ratio. She knows the distance between the x coordinates is 8 units. Which of the following fractions will let her find the x coordinate for point E?

SmokeyBrown:

Hello, and welcome to QuestionCove! The x-coordinates for C and D have a difference of 8 because (11-3 = 8) E is closer to C than to D by a ratio of 3:5, and we know the total x-distance adds up to 8. We can imagine these 8 units being split between C and D according to this ratio, in a way that gives us 3:5. It just so happens that 3 and 5 add up to 8, and 3/5 would also give us this ratio. Is this what the question means when it asks "Which of the following fractions"? Also, are you given a choice of fractions to choose from?
