artlover03:

"First they came for..." Martin Niemöller First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Tone and Mood.... Let's begin with what you know about these concepts in English. Tone, what have you learned about it?

artlover03:

a general attitude of an article or perspectivebh

Satellite74:

Correct. An attitude. Our attitudes, as humans, can be different depending on the situation. It can be joyful, it can be angry, it can be formal, sad, etc. So based on this article... what tone do you think this excerpt gives? Read it in your mind, giving it the tone that matches the story.

Satellite74:

How would you think the author sounds in this excerpt?

artlover03:

jealous.. really dont get it so i hope thats it

Satellite74:

Hmm... Well, I can see why you could think that. However, this sounds more like "came for" means "going to attack". The author didn't "speak out" when the Socialists came for any of these groups, because he was not one of them. But when they came for his own kind, he doesn't seem to be happy, right? "There was no one left to speak for me."

Satellite74:

You're on the right track, though What tone would you read it in, now?

artlover03:

"minds their own buisness" type of attiude, hurt, and or sad

Satellite74:

Right. That final word comes close. "Sad". But what kind of sad? Scared sad? Or just generally depressed sad?

artlover03:

scared

Satellite74:

Correct. So let's just go ahead and say it more properly: the tone is sad. Scared. Now, let's talk about Mood. You knew what Tone was in English, so what's Mood?

artlover03:

descibes feelings or emotiuons

Satellite74:

Did you learn about the main types of mood yet? Indicative, the imperative, and the subjunctive?

artlover03:

no

Satellite74:

I guess we aren't there yet, then. That's fine. Mood in this case is basically, the overall feel of the story or literature, not the author's point of view. What's one word you would use to describe the mood of the story? It certainly isn't happy, as a hint!

1738Que:

Think of tone as the way u talk tone can be passionate or with attitude the mood is emotion it could be sad depressing or even an awkward mood it could be a way the author or protagonist feel against something
