Well, I can see why you could think that. However, this sounds more like "came for" means "going to attack".
The author didn't "speak out" when the Socialists came for any of these groups, because he was not one of them. But when they came for his own kind, he doesn't seem to be happy, right? "There was no one left to speak for me."
