Above is a battle map from the battle of Valley Forge. Using the scale on the map, about how many kilometers is it from the American Position from August 25-29 (Newport) to White Horse, following the American route to White Horse?

Hi, and welcome to QuestionCove! Without the diagram to go along with this question, it is impossible to provide a definitive answer, but I can still try to guide you to find the answer yourself. In the future, please know that you can attach images or screenshots via the "Attach File" button that appears after you've made your initial post. If the map has a scale specified (for example, 1/100,000 scale), you can use that to match the distance on the map to the distance of the area it represents. For example, in 1/100,000 scale in particular, 1 cm on the map would represent 1 km of real distance. Alternatively, the map may have a segmented line with a scale, which you can use to measure and calculate real distances, for instance, with a ruler. After determining that information, all you would have to do is measure the distance on the map between the locations mentioned (Newport to White Horse) and convert that into real distance based on the scale.

Check pg. 43 of the pdf, problem 9 under maps https://s3.amazonaws.com/scschoolfiles/2310/7th_sc_ss.pdf @SmokeyBrown I'm a little tired can you take a look at this question again

SmokeyBrown:

@vocaloid Thank you for the assist! Based on the diagram (which I will try to attach), it seems that the distance between Newport and White Horse (based on the scale provided) is between 30 and 40 kilometers. BUT this is only if we go in a straight line. The correct choice would NOT be 30 kilometers, because the question specifies " following the American route to White Horse", which is the path outlined in dark blue on the map. The blue path we need to follow is not a straight line, but we can estimate how long it is by breaking it up into approximately-straight sections. For example, the section from Newport to Chadds Ford is about 20 km. Then, the section from Chadds Ford to Chester is about another 20 km. From Chester to the bend of the next northeast loop is about another 20 km, and the remaining distance of the loop to White horse is about 30 km. Put together, I would estimate that the total path is about 90 km. Is there an answer choice that matches this estimation? If you agree with my method, you can feel free to go with that answer
