Notice that PEMDAS (alternatively, BODMAS, etc.) starts with parentheses/brackets. Starting from the innermost parentheses, you apply exponents, multiplication/division, addition/subtraction

Ex: 1 + (2-3*4(5+6))

Innermost is 5+6 = 11
Then 2 - 3*4*11 (multiplication, then subtraction)
And finally the 1+ at the beginning
