notice how he just changed the -4.4 to a +4.4. you cannot just change signs in math.

if he wanted to use additive inverses, this is how he would write it: instead of -4.4, it would be + (-4.4) giving us

−8.3 + 9.2 + (-4.4) + 3.7

from there, he can apply the commutative property, associtive property, and simplification as before.
