Now the only way to avoid this shipwreck, and to provide for our posterity, is to follow the counsel of Micah: to do justly, to love mercy, to walk humbly with our God. For this end, we must be knit together in this work as one man. We must entertain each other in brotherly affection. We must be willing to abridge ourselves of our superfluities, for the supply of others’ necessities. We must uphold a familiar commerce together in all meekness, gentleness, patience, and liberality. How does this excerpt contribute to the effect of Winthrop’s message on his audience? Winthrop conveys the idea that the colonists are expected to take care of themselves before addressing the needs of others. It calls into question the moral character of the audience by listing the areas in which they are deficient. Winthrop sets a warning tone by comparing the challenges that the colonists will face in their new home to a disaster at sea. It encourages the audience to model the behavior of a respected religious figure to ensure the colony does not fail.

C?

SmokeyBrown:

I do not think C would be the correct choice, because the excerpt does not mention or reference any "disaster at sea". In the passage, the speaker encourages his listeners to "follow the counsel of Michah" (I assume Micah is a respected religious figure), and then he goes on to explain how the people should behave in order to insure the colony does not fail. Which answer choice do you think would be best, if we keep this in mind as the purpose of the excerpt?

eatsalad:

D

SmokeyBrown:

I would agree, I also think that that is the best answer choice :)
