Can someone explain what an "inference" means?

An "inference" is like a conclusion you can draw based on given information or observations, sort of like putting clues together to come up with a new idea. For example, if you saw that the clouds were getting dark and you heard thunder in the distance, you could "infer" that it might rain soon. One definition of "inference" is "a conclusion or opinion that is formed because of known facts or evidence", from Webster's online dictionary https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/inference
