What was the main issue relating to Reconstruction that divided Republicans at the end of the Civil War?
Well the main issue that lead to the civil war was slavery so what do you think was the main issue that caused the Reconstruction?
I think they divided over the punishment they was going to be giving to the South. What do you think the reason was? I need some ideas so my thoughts can start flowing.
Your right, first person is wrong. It's a shame people who get so divided over this don't have their facts right.
Sorry, when people get divided over this
Abraham Lincoln argued that, to rebuild the union, forgiveness was required. The faster people set aside their differences the faster reconstruction could occur.
However, there wasn't just a disagreement among Republicans. Reconstruction occurred during Andrew Jackson's term, and he supported Abraham Lincoln. However, he was out matched through checks and balances by congress, which largely consisted of people who wanted to punish the south
It even led to Jackson getting impeached because of his attempts to bypass congress. He was only able to stay as president by 1 vote I believe
So the reason why they divided was because of the punishment of the south?
Because the question is really asking "What was the Republican Party divided over?"
?
