~A writing/Essay Guide~
A writing guide...by astro Understanding the prompt... First step to writing any piece is understanding what the prompt is and what you already know about the topic. This step is easy for some harder for others, take your time and really try to grasp a understanding of what you are supposed to be writing about, whether it be...climate change or a personal narrative make sure you have the right set of skills and know what your strengths and weaknesses are when writing and try to work on those throughout writing your piece.
Brainstorming and Thesis After you have a general understanding of what you are writing about you can start your very important brainstorming process. This should usually take the longest time because you have to decide the exact way you want to write your piece. You have to remember the prompt and examine what would make a good piece in the “genre” you’re writing about...think of things like “what perspective do I want this to be in?”, if this is an argumentative piece, “what am I arguing?”. Things along those lines. I suggest using a technique called the starburst method...this method is used when writing and typically you write down the words “where, when, how. what… from there you start to put in what you want to be the “when, where, how, what..” That will give you a very good guide to start off your brainstorming process and you will have a general outline to your writing piece… This is when you should start to brainstorm about a good thesis statement that compels the reader, this is the main point of your writing so make sure to make it strong. The thesis should also be concise but also sum what you are writing about in about one sentance
Introductory paragraph What you would do next is to start writing...this would include a starting introductory paragraph which would include your thesis statement or introductory argument. This paragraph should be used to help the reader get an understanding of what you are writing and a general background of the topic. This should usually be quite short with just enough sentences to help the reader get introduced to the writing. Around 2-3 sentences sometimes more depending on the type of writing
Body paragraphs The second paragraph you would be writing is the first body paragraph, usually in an essay a paper has 3 or more body paragraphs explaining what you are writing about using supporting evidence or explaining what you are writing about. Make sure to do your research and make sure to use quotes and examples from other writings but make sure when using others quotes not to plagiarize this will automatically get you a zero on all essays. These paragraphs should do the job of explaining/supporting your main thesis. These body paragraphs should cover a different supporting detail or idea surrounding your thesis. A good body paragraph should contain a topic sentence {Which should explain why to support your topic}. It should also include examples of things that back-up/support your claim.
Conclusion.. This paragraph should be about restating your thesis, it should also help summarize all topics stated in your body paragraphs. The conclusion should be used to wrap up the general idea of the piece and help the reader understand what they got out of reading your piece.
Wrapping up... Writing an essay can be very hard, trying to understand all these topics and trying to think of a good idea to even start writing about… remember that you work on your own time and try to take your time and do your best on all things acedemic. Just remember, mistakes only help us learn and grow and in writing that’s a great thing to have. At the end of writing your essay make sure to proof-read everything. You probably even want a peer to review it also. This will help you make sure you have everything you need to get an A on all your writing pieces.
