What is a good method to choose for writing an essay?

mylesnewman:

What kind of essay?

XxLuckyXx:

An argumentative essay.

simsharrison:

I can help. OK, so when you are writing an argumentative essay you are trying to persuade something right?

simsharrison:

So with that in mind, you need to have a strong first paragraph where you are stating your position, or stating your argument, In the second paragraph, you will give at least 2 pieces of evidence to support your argument, and quotes, or data will help a lot.

mylesnewman:

Introduction: Restate the question/prompt into your answer. Say, if I was prompted "Should emotional support dogs be allowed into restaurants? Why or why not?", and I believe they shouldn't, I would start like "I believe that emotional support dogs should not be allowed into restaurants because...(here I would state reasons I believe this, 3 preferably for argumentative essays.)". Then maybe a sort of rebuttal like "Some people believe they should, but I can eliminate these claims with evidence." Then you may begin writing your first body paragraph, which I will help with next. You can also use a hook-like starting sentence.. Example: "Imagine you're having a nice dinner out, and someone walks in with a loud unleashed dog. How would that affect your enjoyment? Some people want to allow dogs that aren't disability help into your restaurants. This would not be sensible because...(list of reasons)." Introduction end.

CER, Claim Evidence and Reasoning In my senior year of highschool, our teacher showed us: RACCES: Restate - Restate the prompt in your own words while adding strong word choice Answer - Answer the prompt and introduce your evidence Context - What do we need to know to understand your evidence? - Currently... - In recent years... - When ___ happened... - In one scene... Cite - Who said it? Who are they? X, (intro), claims.... According to X, an expert on _____,... X, (intro) states.... In describing ____, X writes.... Explain - Put it into your own words & what does it show? Basically X is saying .... This shows that ... X's point is that .... This indicates that .... Significance - Who cares? What should we do? What is the lasting impact? Based on this, one can infer.... One can conclude.... The impact of this.... Hope this helps if not, then I wasted a lot of time lol

You can have as many paragraphs as you need to have a strong argumentative essay, but if you keep going in the format I am teaching you, you will have to keep going, so in the 3rd paragraph, you give more evidence or you can conclude, but if you conclude here, it wont be as good as if you gave more reasoning and evidence, the more you give, the better your essay is going to be. In the last paragraph, you will restate your thesis, and have a strong last sentence that ties in your whole essay in one sentence
