So the families can be mean because how they treat thier kids or say bad stuff to them to not make them succeed.

well they do stuff that other people can do but not as good as the people who raised you but they can also be super mean and rude and unsupportive.

The question is asking if the people who decide to mentor you to success mean more or less than the effort that YOU put in, in order to succeed.
