in a linear equation, all the terms are either constants, or variables raised to the exponent of 1

so:

y = (a constant) counts, like y = 0 or y = 1
y = x + 3 counts (x is only raised to x^1)
y = 10x - 2 counts

however, y = x^2, or sqrt(x), or x^(-1) would not count
