If it takes Beth 9 hours to tar a roof, then she can (1/9) of the job per hour, right?

So for (t) hours, she does (1/9)t work

Same logic for Jose (1/13)t work.

Their work will add up to 1 completed roof, so (1/9)t + (1/13)t = 1, solve for t

it takes her 9 hours to tar a roof. every hour, she gets (1/9) of the whole job done.

9t would imply 9 roofs per hour.
