I think when you have a number like |-3| it is always positive

There isn't much difference between the two. |3| means the absolute value which will ALWAYS be a positive number. 3 is the exact same thing. It's just plain old 3.

Anything inside "||" will be positive no matter what the value is. It's like the symbols get rid of the negative sign.
