"The Road Not Taken" is literally about a traveler who comes to a fork in the road. Explain how the poem could be understood as a metaphor for choices in life. How do you think the narrator feels about the choices he has made in life? Choose words from the poem that support your answer. How do these words affect the feeling, or "tone"?

Notice how the narrator of the poem has to make a choice between two physical paths in the woods. The narrator contemplates what both paths are like, and which they should take. Extending this metaphorically to life choices, you can think of the two paths as two different life choices someone might have to make. Re-read the poem. Think about how the narrator feels about having to take the two paths. I definitely see the narrator being indecisive, or even regretful, about certain choices in life, indicated by words like "sigh" "doubted" and "sorry." What else can you find in the poem?
