- what are artists doing? well, a collage is an art piece made up of smaller pieces like photos or pieces of fabric, etc. so an artist making a collage would seek out other materials that go together, and combine them in an appealing way, to make a collage
- what principle are they following? you could argue that every art piece uses all the principles of art to some degree, but for a collage, I think unity and balance are some of the most important. a collage artists will pick individual pieces that go together well (unity) despite being from different sources. additionally, they will arrange things to balance out the composition in terms of color, subject, textures, etc.
