The purpose of an exposition is to explain things in the story. It can explain some basic backstory about the characters and setting. For example, if you've ever seen any Star Wars movies, you might remember they open with a large paragraph in yellow text explaining some basic details about the story. So I would say a good exposition helps the reader understand some basic details about the story, without being boring or giving away too much.
