Alright so multiple reasons why he left.
If you go off the play,
One reason would be to start a new life, another being so he could rise up from being in the dumps for so long, a third being (a pretty big reason) is so he can educate himself, which leads him to trying to get a scholarship at King's College (Now known as Columbia University).
