When the Founding Fathers wrote the U.S. Constitution, they had an important goal in mind. They wanted to form a government that did not let any one person have too much control or power. To accomplish this, they created three branches of government and divided the powers of the US Government between them. Each branch, the Legislative, the Executive & the Judicial, has its own responsibilities, but each also works together to make the country run smoothly and to make sure that the rights of citizens are not ignored or taken away. This is done through a system called checks and balances. One branch may use its powers to check or limit the powers of the other two in order to keep the power of the government balanced between the three branches of government.
