In the story borders why did the speaker’s mother want to travel

Well, was there any motivation, reason, or anything providing in regards to the mother traveling? Was it something because of her past? If so, what was it? Was it just wanting to get out of her hometown? All of these things could be correct, you just have to find the part of the story where her past and/or reasoning was talked about!
