You can use the Pythagorean theorem when you have a right triangle, you know the lengths of two sides, and you want to know the third length From the top of my head, imagine you’re in a city and you know that landmark A is (x) units east, landmark B is (y) units north. You can draw a triangle and use the Pythagorean theorem to find the distance between landmarks A and B.
