dbcbskca:

Graph a triangle (LMN) and rotate it 180° around the origin to create triangle L′M′N′. (10 points) Describe the transformation using words. Make sure you refer to the characteristics and the coordinates. Draw a line through points L and L′ and through M and M′. What do you notice about the lines you drew? Do you think you would notice the same characteristics if you drew another line through points N and N′? How do you know?

dbcbskca:

need help asap

carmelle:

is this a test?

dbcbskca:

why lol

carmelle:

well, the question says `'(10 points)'` so I just wanted to know if it was a test :)

dbcbskca:

hw

carmelle:

ok, so where is the triangle LMN?

dbcbskca:

thats all i got theres no image

carmelle:

ah ok, so im assuming that your teacher wants you to make a triangle yourself. are you familiar www.geogebra.org ?

dbcbskca:

yeah i have used it once a while back

carmelle:

ok, so start by making your triangle... what will your points be? once you get your points, you will then need to rotate the triangle 180º if you are confused about rotating it 180º, the rule is (x,y) → (-x,-y)

dbcbskca:

i can choose any points?

carmelle:

yup, any points can work :)

dbcbskca:

ok 3,5

carmelle:

ok.. L(3,5) what about point M and N

dbcbskca:

3,9

dbcbskca:

wait no 4,6

carmelle:

L(3,5) M(3,9) N(4,6) are those your chosen points?

dbcbskca:

sure

carmelle:

ok, so using the rule I gave you above, what would your points lie located after rotating it 180º?

dbcbskca:

i have to graph those points on the website right

carmelle:

yea you can, it will be easier for you... so did you find out what L'M'N' is?

dbcbskca:

website is kinda confusing haven't used it in a long time

carmelle:

its alright... if you cant use it, its fine, you can graph the triangle by hand instead... Now lets rotate the triangle 180º Rule: (x,y) → (-x,-y) L(3,5) → L'(__,__) M(3,9) → M'(__,__) N(4,6) → N'(__,__) in other words... all you have to do to it make the numbers negative

carmelle:

is*

dbcbskca:

so basically (-3,-5)

carmelle:

correct, now do that for all the other points

dbcbskca:

(-3,-9) and (-4,-6)

carmelle:

correct!! so basically, it should look like this

dbcbskca:

okay yeah

dbcbskca:

thats it now i just describe what i did?

carmelle:

not necessarily, now you are describing the transformation itself... so ask yourself these questions... (these are just a few) did my triangle change its shape? did my triangle change its size? did my triangle change its orientation?

dbcbskca:

okay my triangle did not change shape my triangle did not change size and i think it did change it orientation

carmelle:

Great!! can you describe anything else...?

carmelle:

what happened to your points?? did the numbers stay the same? did my numbers stay positive? did my numbers become negative?

dbcbskca:

the number became negatives

dbcbskca:

they were positive before rotation 180 degrees

carmelle:

Good job!! So you have answered the first part, now lets go onto the second.... I went ahead and drew the line for you since you said you had some trouble. what do you notice about the lines?

dbcbskca:

they go through the middle i forgot what it was called

dbcbskca:

the origin i think

carmelle:

I agree, they go through (0,0) which is the `origin`

dbcbskca:

yeah

carmelle:

now, how about N and N'... does the same thing happen too?

dbcbskca:

yeah all of the lines pass through the origin

carmelle:

That's right!! You answered both questions, so you are done! Great job! :D

dbcbskca:

:)

dbcbskca:

thank you very much

carmelle:

you're welcome and have a great day :) also, welcome to question cove!!

dbcbskca:

i appreciate it
