This may be way wrong, but I am going to try it anyway. Well, your friend is incorrect because of the equation. He wrote "CaCO subscript 3 -> CaO + CO subscript 2", whereas the equation written is not written the correct way. Reason I say this is because of how it really should we written. Here's where I think I'm wrong. I think he should've written it CaCO subscript 3 --> CaCO + CO subscript 2 because if you add that together, it would equal CaCO subscript 3. Let me know if that is wrong, I do not fully know how to add chemical equations yet.
