help?

Krissy525:

yes?

maths89898:

can you help me with math?

Krissy525:

sure

maths89898:

Bev has to cut her grandma's grass this weekend and wants to know exactly how much area she will be cutting. Calculate the area of the polygon. Be sure to show all your work and explain your answer.

Krissy525:

Sorry, but I forgot how to do this type of math.

maths89898:

oh

Krissy525:

good luck getting help :)

maths89898:

ty

maths89898:

anybody here?????

maths89898:

😪

Jaynater:

First, we need to divide up this entire shape. We can easily gather a triangle and a trapezoid, or two triangles and one rectangle. You will need to select which method you want to use to solve this problem. By one triangle and one trapezoid is how I'll be solving this, so we'll need to equations for the area of a triangle and the area of a trapezoid. These two equations will look like this: let b represent our base, and h represent our height. 1/2bh will be our triangle area equation, and (base 1 + Base 2)h / 2 will be our trapezoid equation. To solve for our triangle (the part on the top left) we need to first find its base and height. Do you know how that can be determined? If so, try solving for the area with the equations given.

maths89898:

Im not sure how to make the equation I've never done anything like this before so it's my first time

maths89898:

So for the triangle It's (height+base) and for the trapezoid its (base+base) right?

Jaynater:

Triangle Area = base times height divided by 2, or one half base times height. 1/2bh Trapezoid Area = Base 1 + Base 2 times the height, then divide by two. (b1+b2)h / 2

maths89898:

For the triangle would it be 15x25 x 1/2?

maths89898:

or 19x25x1/2

Jaynater:

It'd be 15*15, because we get our height on the upper left side, labeled as 15 units. Then, we have to subtract 4 from 19 to get our base measurement, which is also 15 units Understand?

maths89898:

ahh okay got it

Jaynater:

Make sure to divide by two though after 15*15

maths89898:

112.5

Jaynater:

Correct, now that's one area down. We still have to find the area of the trapezoid. Do you feel comfortable doing that on your own?

maths89898:

Mhm!

Jaynater:

Alright, what do you get?

maths89898:

(b+b) + h = ? then divide by two

maths89898:

i mean x*

Jaynater:

No, it's (b1+b2) * h then divide by two

maths89898:

yeah exactly

Jaynater:

Alright, so what do you get?

maths89898:

Would our bases be 29 and 4?

Jaynater:

25 and 29, as we have to find the top and bottom of the trapezoid. That'd be the top and bottom. 29 is the undrawn segment between the top right point of our triangle and the bottom left point of the trapezoid. This is either a top or bottom piece of the trapezoid. 25 is a labeled segment that's the top and/or bottom of the trapezoid. We combine these two values first.

maths89898:

ah thank you im really bad at this its my first time

Jaynater:

It's fine; it's a learning experience.

maths89898:

25+29= 54

maths89898:

then we multiply by the height

maths89898:

which is 25

maths89898:

wait no

maths89898:

that'd be a little too over

maths89898:

So 4?

Jaynater:

It's the 4 because that's the length between the top and bottom segments.

maths89898:

so 216

maths89898:

then if you divide it by 2

Jaynater:

Correct, then?

maths89898:

it'd be 108

maths89898:

108+112.5

Jaynater:

Mhm. And that gives you?

maths89898:

220.5

Jaynater:

Nicely done! That's the total area that Bev has to cut.

maths89898:

Thank you so much for your help I've been struggling with this for a while!

Jaynater:

make sure to put your answer in units squared

Jaynater:

Also, you're welcome. That's what we're here for.
