Part II: Application and Critical Thinking (20 points) 7. You have learned about five elements that historians use to determine if a society should be called a civilization: • Job specialization • Advanced cities • Advanced technology • Systems of writing • Complex social institutions Many different historical civilizations feature these traits. But which ones provide the best examples of each feature? Write five short paragraphs, one for each of the elements, that describe how these traits appear in actual civilizations. You must use a different civilization for each element, so think carefully about which ones you would like to use before you begin writing. Be sure to use specific historical evidence to support your claims. I don't understand what it is asking for. Can anyone hep me with this?

Rylee88:

It's saying that each one (Job specialization Advanced cities Advanced technology Systems of writing Complex social institutions) One of these has the best perk to it. So for example; if you were offered a job let's say at Walmart and Publix, Walmart pays 11$ an hour and Publix pays 8$ an hour. Walmart would be better because they give you 11$ an hour which is more than 8 so that is a better perk so Walmart would be a good choice. So that was an EXAMPLE obviously not the real question, So with all those (Job specialization Advanced cities Advanced technology Systems of writing Complex social institutions) which gives the best ¨perk¨ or in other words the best traits.

midnightriver46:

do you know which one will be the best perk

Rylee88:

These definitions are from google; Job specialization; Job specialization is a process that occurs when employees gain knowledge, education, and experience in a specific area of expertise. Advanced Cities; Advanced Cities. A growing city that is the center of trade for a larger area, and has a surplus. City dwellers depend on trade and produce a variety of goods on their own. Advanced technology; Advanced technology is defined as a new or developing IT innovation that still has relatively few users, yet promises to provide future, significant value. Systems of writing; The major writing systems – methods of inscription – broadly fall into four categories: logographic, syllabic, alphabetic, and featural. Complex social institutions; Typically, contemporary sociologists use the term to refer to complex social forms that reproduce themselves such as governments, the family, human languages, universities, hospitals, business corporations, and legal systems. *NOTE THESE DEFINITIONS ARE FROM GOOGLE* So out of all of these which do YOU think sounds more efficient?

midnightriver46:

but it says *You must use a different civilization for EACH ELEMENT*

Rylee88:

FROM GOOGLE; You must use a different civilization for EACH ELEMENT; Civilization describes a complex way of life characterized by urban areas, shared methods of communication, administrative infrastructure, and division of labor.

midnightriver46:

ok so like what civilization should I use

Rylee88:

What do YOU think?

midnightriver46:

I actually don't know what is means by civilization for each element

Rylee88:

So out of all those definitions I gave which sounds more like a complex way of life characterized, communication, administrative infrastructure

Rylee88:

I personally would say; Systems of writing; The major writing systems – methods of inscription – broadly fall into four categories: logographic, syllabic, alphabetic, and featural. OR Complex social institutions; Typically, contemporary sociologists use the term to refer to complex social forms that reproduce themselves such as governments, the family, human languages, universities, hospitals, business corporations, and legal systems.

midnightriver46:

ok, Thank you!
