Another way to think about this problem, which may be more helpful dealing with the fractional part:



if you split 1 ⅔ into 1 and 2/3, and 2 ⅔ into 2 and 2/3, you can split the area into four rectangles. for each rectangle, multiply the length and width to get the area.
