well no you can still be racist while it being an important character. like in one piece they made a character with racist stereotype while he was still a important character i think/

halezz99:

are you like asking for advice on like how to draw it or like if you should do it or not?

maths89898:

as long as its cultural appreciation and not cultural appropriation and not racist

eternitybun:

@halezz99 wrote:

im writing a story

maths89898:

then your good to go

halezz99:

yeah you will be fine just go for it

eternitybun:

@halezz99 wrote:

maths89898:

"im making a black main love interest and i dont wanna offend anybody and want to educate myself"

maths89898:

be specific please

halezz99:

just write from your heart like be truthful with the people that are reading your story

eternitybun:

@maths89898 wrote:

i wanna learn on how or not how to write a person of color. like i heard that you should compare their skin to things you eat like chocolate

halezz99:

just go with the flow

maths89898:

bestie nooo

maths89898:

When your writing about a person of color, DO NOT mention their race

maths89898:

write them as you'd write a white person, when your writing a white person you dont see a writer comparing their skin to an object

maths89898:

it'd be real weird if you compared them to an object

halezz99:

yeah don't mention the race some people find that rude

eternitybun:

i know im trying to say that isnt what i want to do.

eternitybun:

i was saying a example

maths89898:

just dont mention their race treat them like a normal person

maths89898:

for example

eternitybun:

OH SORRY I THOUGHT I PUT NOT TO

maths89898:

OH

maths89898:

YEAH DONT DO THAT

dukedadon:

that makes sense now

halezz99:

no your fine

eternitybun:

SORRY I WAS TEXTING TO FAST SORRY

maths89898:

ITS FINE LOL

halezz99:

long as you just write from your heart you will be fine

maths89898:

hm okay lets say

maths89898:

your character is eating something

maths89898:

dont make the food a stereotype

maths89898:

like for example you might be mexican and people will assume you only eat tacos

eternitybun:

haha i am mexican. but yeah i understand that

maths89898:

yeahhh i get that a lot

eternitybun:

people always think i speak spanish and know a bunch of stuff invovling hispanics-

maths89898:

i can relate as i am hispanic myself

maths89898:

😪

eternitybun:

i wanna make my character be black and it invovle how racism is still a thing. like it wont be the main conflict but it would still be somethin.

maths89898:

well if your gonna make racism like a conflict don't be mentioning their race allll the time

maths89898:

you should make racism a conflict about 1-4 times because if you keep mentioning the racism people will start assuming stuff ab you

eternitybun:

oh yeah yeah im only gonna put it in once in a while but not make it a wholllle big thing

maths89898:

yeah do that

eternitybun:

just to make it still realistic on how much racism happens

maths89898:

yeah exactly

TheWraith2021:

Regarding your question, this is very straight forward. Just treat them as a regular person. They're black. Awesome. That info should be about as important as mentioning any other race. As for the racism thing, that's been done before. You already have BLM doing that and it's not like people are unaware of it. Instead, focus on the actual plot of your story: the love and romance. Don't be throwing a ridiculous amount of attention to your racism storyline. People try to read books to escape reality, not be reminded of issues they see regularly on the news and social media. Focus on the love plot and you'll be fine.

yes it is still a big thing doesnt mean its enough. if people want an escape then my story isnt it. it wont be a big focus but i still want it be a conflict to be a bit realistc

eternitybun:

but i get what you mean i think so thank you

TheWraith2021:

Okay, but like pretty much the new trend now with black characters on TV and books and pop culture is to state how unfairly they're treated, so I figured I'd recommend just focusing on the plot of the story, to help differentiate yourself from other writers. You do what you think is best though. It's your book after all.

you too! its becoming a thing because people are learning and educating themselves or at least i hope so.

afflatedAnimism:

Don't put too much thought into the fact your MC is black. Focus on the plot as much as you can and treat them just like any other character. Don't use any weird words to describe their skin tone or face complex and features.

afflatedAnimism:

Your book is about romance, not race. Keep going dude ily/p
