(1) Old Orchard Road seemed to stretch to infinity today as Marcie and her brother Will hightailed it home from the County Fair. Marcie checked her watch and scowled. "If we hadn't stayed to watch your silly calf-roping event, we'd be home already," she declared. "Mama will be furious." (2) "Relax," Will responded calmly, "I'll just sweet talk her like I always do." (3) Marcie shook her head doubtfully as they walked on in silence. Suddenly, Will snapped his fingers and suggested, "Let's take the shortcut through the forest!" (4) Before Marcie could object, Will dashed off through the trees. She had little choice but to follow. Above her, menacing purple clouds consumed the sun. The forest itself, pine-scented and cool, was pitch dark, and Marcie kept tripping on tree roots. Walking cautiously, she called to her brother as the first drops of a rainstorm pelted her head. (5) "Down here, Marcie," Will yelled, and Marcie instinctively moved toward the sound, nearly stepping off a mossy ledge. Looking around for an easier way, she spied an opening and carefully climbed down the slope to her brother. (6) "I've twisted my ankle," Will moaned, trying unsuccessfully to stand. (7) The rain was nearly torrential now, and Marcie needed to act quickly. "I'll get you out of here, Will. Just lean on my shoulder, and we'll take it slowly." (8) Half an hour later, their mother embraced her sopping wet children at the gate. "I should really scold you," she said, "but I'm just so relieved you're safe!" (9) "See, I told you I could sweet talk her," Will whispered to Marcie, who just rolled her eyes. Why does the author use the word infinity in the first paragraph? A. to show that Will and Marcie are familiar with the road B. to suggest that the County Fair lasted a long time C. to convey that the road seemed longer than usual
