The addition of tablet computers in 2010 presented yet another opportunity for people to stay constantly connected to the Internet. Since then, there's been an explosion in the Apps market and a number of individuals or companies developing Web sites. What an App Is The term, app is used quite often, but it is not always used to represent the same thing. Basically, app stands for application. An application is a piece of software that runs on an electronic device. The app will allow the device to do something specific or a set of related tasks. Some are quite simple; others are more complex. Apps are written for specific types of mobile devices. Each mobile device runs on a different type of software so the app must be compatible with the device. For example, the app that you would put on a Smart Phone is not the same app that you would put on an iPad. The systems are different so the apps must be designed to work with the specific device. Many apps access the Internet; others are designed to work offline. Apps must be downloaded on a device. They cannot be accessed online as Web sites can. What’s Important in App Design Given the right tools, any person can design an app. When designing a mobile app, there are several things to keep in mind. One of the biggest concerns you need to be aware of is the size of the screen. Mobile devices are not like laptop computers; they are very small and are often used when people are on the move. Because of this, you need to be careful with your navigation. In general, one navigates with a touch or a sweep of the finger. Make sure that your app does not have multiple navigation options too close together. If it does, people will hit an unintended option and become frustrated. Another big limitation is battery life. If your app uses anything like a GPS or real-time program, it will need to run the entire time your app is in use. This is a power drain for the phone. Finally, be mindful of data transfer.
