Well, the battle of Okinawa was the bloodiest war in WWII on the Pacific area. Of the 12,281 Americans reported killed in the Okinawa campaign, 4,907 were U.S. Navy personnel.
100,000 Japanese soldiers died, and over 50,000 Allied soldiers were killed as a result.
They wanted to use the island as a base (obviously a naval base.) It was necessary as a staging post and supply base for 'Operation Downfall' — the invasion of the Home Islands of Japan.
It also marked the beginning of the assault of Japan in WWII. (this kind of foreshadowed the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.) After all of this, including the bombings, Japan would surrender in the war.
