Friend: *is arranging things on the ground* "So this goes.....here. And uh, this piece goes um...here?"
Me: *laughs lightly, watching them*
Friend: "Ah heck, never mind, that didn't go there..."
Me: *looks up at the sky and murmurs* "Hey, uh, it looks like it's going to rain."
Friend: *glances up and groans* "Yeah, you're right. Shoot. I didn't check what the weather was going to be like. Um, wanna pick this up later?"
Me: *picks up my iPad and other materials we were using for our project* "We probably should."
Friend: *helps clean up as the clouds open and give way to drops of rain*
Me: *holds the items close while running back home*
Friend: *follows close behind*
Me: *arrives shortly and steps inside* "Mom! I'm home!"
Mom: *smiles* "Oh hello there, hun. I thought you were going to be out longer? Who's this?" *gestures to the friend*
Me: "Oh that's my friend. We were doing a project together outside down the block, but then it started to rain so we had to pack it all up. We'll reschedule to do it later when it's not raining outside. They're gonna stay around for a bit, though."
Mom: "Ah, alright, sounds good. You're welcome to stay for dinner."
Friend: "Thanks." *sits down on the couch*
Me: "Hold on, I'll be right back." *runs upstairs to shove the materials under my bed quickly but carefully and to re-brush my hair, returning downstairs into the main room to the friend afterwards*
*a silence settles between them, both of them unsure what to do now that their plans had changed because of the unexpected weather*
Friend: *breaks the silence* "Uh, so, how are you?"
Me: *sits down on a chair adjacent to the friend* "Oh you know, good. I'm happy, despite the weather. You?"
Friend: *fiddles with a pencil from the table* "I'm good too. Kinda sleepy though."
Me: "Oh, well, wanna sleep over?"
Friend: "Nah, can't. Gonna visit my grandparents tomorrow."
*their conversation continues on in a normal, familiar fashion, and the day goes on*
